Hosting: What Does This Term Mean?
The following terms below some of the hosting terms that are used on our website. This is invaluable if you are new to hosting, or are unsure to what an element of your hosting exactly does.
Bandwidth - This is the amount of traffic that your website can receive each month, depending on the size of the files made available on your website, the amount of bandwidth used will vary.
cPanel - This allows you to easily control everything from adding/removing email accounts to administering MySQL databases.
Cron Jobs - Set up automatic processes that you would like your web site to do each day. For example, you may want your website to automatically delete unneeded content from your database.
Custom Error Pages - Create your own error pages when an item, or a page cannot be found, or if a different error occurs on your website. Custom error pages allow your site to look more professional, and you could even help point your visitors in the right direction.
Email Auto-Responders - Send an automatic reply to anyone who sends an email to one of your website’s email addresses.
Email Forwarding - Automatically forward (send) emails from your any of your website’s email addresses, to your main email address.
Email POP3/IMAP - Our web hosting fully supports both the POP3 and IMAP email protocols. IMAP is an advanced protocol which gives you greater flexibility with your email. An example use of IMAP, you would be able to access your mailbox from wherever you are rather than being tied to a particular PC.
Fantastico - This allows you to install a large amount of scripts, ranging from bulletin boards, to content management systems. It can take just minutes to set up the various scripts that are made on offer, and update the scripts on a regular basis.
FrontPage - Our hosting packages are capable of supporting FrontPage Extensions. FrontPage Extensions are server-side scripts that allow you to extend the use of Microsoft FrontPage, allowing you to publish to your web space directly from your PC.
Mailing Lists -If you want to keep some people up-to-date with what is happening on your website, your latest product, or even just some news that you would like to share, a mailing list makes this an easy process.
MySQL - Our web hosting packages use the MySQL database format. Databases allow you to store, and sort through any information that you would like to make available on your website.
Password Protected Directories - Protect files that you only want a select group of people to access, by the use of a username and password.
PHP4 - PHP is a server-side, HTML embedded scripting language used to create dynamic content. Using PHP will also allow you to access MySQL databases, amongst many other things.
PHP My Admin -This allows you to manually look, create, delete, and edit your MySQL databases – this is a must for anyone whom uses MySQL.
Raw Access Logs / Error Logs - These provide you with a more in-depth look into the workings of your website. The error logs will prove to be valuable when looking for errors in any scripts that you may write, or use on your website.
Site Statistics -If you want to keep track of who’s visiting your website, what they look at, and where they arrived from – then this feature enables you to fully do this.
SPAM Filters - We currently use SpamAssassin to help you stop receiving unwanted SPAM emails.
SSL - SSL is a method of securing a website. An example of using SSL, would be if you wanted to set up an e-commerce based website.
Sub Domains - By using sub domains, you can give out shorter, easier to remember, URLs to friends, family, or even clients to use. This is far easier than telling them a 100 character URL!
Web Space - This is the amount of room you will have to store your website on.
WHM - Available with our reseller packages, WHM allows you to (but is not limited to) administering individual accounts, reseller accounts & performing basic system and control panel maintenance via a secure interface.
